Electronic Health Record Usability Issues

AHRQ Evaluates Ease of Use and Effectiveness of EHR

June 23, 2010

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has just released a report on vendor practices regarding Electronic Health Record (EHR) usability. Usability involves the ease of use and effectiveness of a product. The report uses information garnered from interviews with small, medium and large vendors. It presents several challenges, including the fact that usability is a key competitive factor with vendors. Therefore, collaboration between vendors on usability is "almost nonexistent."

The AHRQ notes that usability does not receive the same attention as software features and technical standards. Recent research found that little evidence has been collected on EHR usability in practice.

ChartLogic's EHR solution was born of a doctor and a health IT provider, dreaming of ways to solve problems surrounding patient chart management. ChartLogic used the knowledge gained from observing live patient encounters and then built ChartLogic EMR - the most innovative product on the market. ChartLogic "one-screen approach" is simple and easy for the physician to learn but more importantly they allow the doctor to enter data as quickly as possible.

ChartLogic uses PrecisionVoiceTM technology, SmartTM features and simple screen layouts to replicate the current paper charting process. Because the electronic health record is done digitally, it eliminates the paper cost, along with the costs of clinical support staff duplicating the physician's documentation work. ChartLogic has continued to focus on the physician experience, ensuring that any investment in the ChartLogic EHR solution is going to succeed.
